We had a terrific turnout for the Crieff 10k on Sunday July 13 on a beautiful sunny day. We had a record numbers of entries, and Nic and Gordon were frantically working out what to do with all the extra runners. There were also last-minute emergency calls to the volunteers caterers for more sandwiches and cakes! This was Nic's first 10k as race organiser, and she did a terrific job - same again next year Nic!
On the day, we had a fantastic new course record set by Robert Gilroy of Ron Hill Cambuslang, who finished in the terrific time of 32.45, taking 45 seconds off his own record, which he set back in 2008. Robert is a regular at the Crieff 10k, and it’s great to see him performing at such a consistently high level. Derek Rae of Anster Haddies was second in a fine 35.41, while Andrew Wright of Ochil HR repeated his third position of last year in 36.42. First woman was Collette Ashworth 43.53. Collette was comfortable in first place, but there was a close race for second woman, eventually won by Julie Menzies of BMF Dunfermline, in 45.42, just ten seconds ahead of Louise Tyler in 45.46.
First local man and first Strathearn Harrier was Will, celebrating his birthday with a personal best time for the course of 37.59. Wattie and Roger were next Harriers and locals, in 8th and 12th positions. First local woman was Gillian Mardon.
The winning men’s team was Central AC, with three runners in the top 10, but we weren't far behind, and if there had been a prize for over-40s, we would have strolled it.
The post-race food lived up to its billing and there was even enough left over to go into the freezer in readiness for the Comrie Hills Relay in September - well done to everyone who put in the effort in the kitchen beforehand. Prizes were presented by Craig Copland of The Handy Shop who provided the bananas for the goody bags.
And thanks of course to everyone who helped on the course, marshalling, timekeeping, registration, car parking, setting out the route, and all the other tasks which go on before and during the race - we couldn't do it without you all.
While the main race was underway, the Junior 1 mile race was run, with organisation from Julia, Maddy, Seonaid, Tracey, Fiona D and Digby (and assorted others - apologies to anyone I've missed out). Overall boys winner was Lewis Forsyth (Strathearn Harriers) in a great time of 5.27. First girl was Valencia Wright, who was also first under-11 girl. Blair Scott was 1st under-11 boy, with Levi Sweeney 1st under-13 boy. Peigi Urquhart was 1st under-13 girl.
The abiding memory was the post-race chill-out in front of the pavilion in the sun - good vibes all round!
