Strathearn Harriers - New Year's Day Run 2014

Harriers at the Highland Fling

Monday, April 27, 2015

So, after months of preparation and training, our six* brave women took on the challenge that is the Highland Fling and dispatched it in fine style! In their own ways, they all overcame assorted aches and pains and injuries to arrive at the start in Milngavie ready for the off with a big adventure ahead of them. Waiting for them along the way was a small army of friends and family offering support and advice and a friendly face. For all concerned, it was a pretty epic day out.

Thanks to the wonders of chip technology, we could watch the progress of all the runners as they made their way through the various checkpoints. The Ruths gave at least some of their supporters a fright with the pace they set at the first checkpoint, with the worry that they'd set off too fast. Oh ye of little faith! Wendy and Kirsty ran together and looked comfortable, while Susan fell and hurt her knee in the first 5 miles - so she carried on for another 48 miles in pain, with Julia for company to keep her going.

Final times at Tyndrum were impressive:Ruth H completed the event in a club record time of 11 hours 27 minutes 43 seconds. Ruth C was less than 4 minutes behind to finish in 11.31.12, with the two Ruths coming in 5th and 6th in their age category.Wendy and Kirsty finished together in 12.57.15, with Julia and Susan beating their target time to finish in 14.24.08.

* For the purposes of this piece, Kirsty is counted as a Harrier because, after all, she is still one of us.
