I've wanted to do the Lairig Ghru race for a few years but have fallen short for assorted reasons. This year I finally made it to the start line in something approaching decent shape and was quite looking for forward to it.
As it turned out, it was tougher than I was expecting, with the terrain after Corrour bothy being rougher than I was expecting even before I got to the boulder field which I knew was going to be hard. By the time I got to the nice downhill bits through Rothiemurcus, which I'd enjoyed when I recce'd them a couple of weeks earlier, my legs weren't really in a state to do very much. The last miles after the Cairngorm Club footbridge were hard work, and the slog up Aviemore High Street isn't the best finish you could hope for.
One of the bright spots was being cheered in by Emily after her epic on Saturday at the Celtman - finally something to put a smile on my face after a miserable few miles.
In the end, I finished in 4.39.11, in 58th position, and 8th MV50. Having done it once, I think I could do better - more training, and more water en route - but I'm quite happy with the result.
