Despite a dreadful weather forecast on Saturday and squally conditions on the day, we had a good turnout for the first race of the Club Championship with the opening club 5k on Lady Mary's Walk. Once again, we had strong contributions from the boys from the Development Squad, with Lewis and Duthac leading the way for the Juniors.
Leaving off where he left off, the overall race was won by Wattie in a time of 17.56, beating his best time from last year. Charlie continued to show his strengths in second place, with a time of 18.48, and also breaking the 20-minute barrier was Lewis in third place overall. Duthac put in a terrific performance following his excellent time-trial last week to finish in 20.37, while Al and Will had a sprint finish for 5th and 6th. Despite blatant blocking from Will, Al put in a dip that Colin Jackson would have been proud of to pip Will on the line. It should be pointed out that Will did start a couple of minutes after everyone else, so he did have a bit of chase.
For the women, Maddy led the way in 21.41, followed by Cathy in 23.26, and Lauren in 29.15 - despite Lauren's assorted wardrobe stops, she still managed to finish 4 minutes ahead of her time last year.
Many thanks to Fi and Susan for timekeeping and recording, to Alistair and Helen for holding gates open, to Gordon for preventing over-enthusiasm taking anyone to Strowan, to Colin for sweeping, to Graham for getting the Juniors to the start in such good order - some of the seniors might take a leaf from their book - and to everyone who supported round the course.
