The dynamic duo of Ruth Howie and Ruth Clark took a last minute decision to enter the D33 ultra marathon as part of their training for the Highland Fling, and completed with a great couple of times. This was their first ultra, and for Ruth H, it was her first race beyond a half marathon.
The D33 is an out-and-back ultra, mainly on good tarmac paths along the route of an old railway line from Aberdeen to Banchory. This year, the winner Ross Houston, finished in a mind-boggling 3.10.40, breaking the course record by a massive 19 minutes! Ross ran the marathon in the Commonwealth Games for Scotland in a time of 2.18.42, so it's possibly not surprising he did so well.
Our pair did themselves proud. Ruth H finished in a terrific 4.51.08, to take 1st female super vet prize, while Ruth C came in at 5.18.07 as 6th female super vet. Sounds like an ideal warm-up for the 53 miles of the Fling!
If you're wondering, Ruth H's time would have given her a 3.49 marathon time!
