The Glen Coe Marathon is a new event, in its second year of running this year. It follows a demanding route starting at the Red Squirrel campsite in Glencoe with a difficult ascent of the Devil’s Staircase over the north side of the glen, into Kinlochleven and then through the Mamores into Fort William, with nearly 1700m of ascent over the whole course.
First Harrier home was Ruth Howie, in her usual irrepressible form, back after a knee injury, to finish in 4.54, with Cathy Tilbrook not far behind, fighting off cramp to finish in 5.14.
Of course the original plan had been for Doug Flint to run it as well, to mark a certain memorable birthday, but sadly, a recurrence of a knee injury meant he had to pull out. Cathy and Doug were raising money for Pancreatic Cancer Action, in memory of Simon Wake, and have raised over £400 to date. You can donate via Doug's JustGiving page here.
