Gartmorn 6 Trail Race

Gartmorn near Alloa, was invaded on Sunday by hordes of Harriers for the Gartmorn 6 and Juniors Trail Races, organised by the Wee County Harriers. This event is becoming a firm favourite with opportunities for adults and juniors to show their paces.

For the Seniors, the Gartmorn 6 was the first Championship race, with points at stake for the overall Club Championship. Weather conditions for this race can be challenging, and this year was no exception, with heavy mud underfoot.

First Harrier home, showing the benefits of quality training at Edinburgh University, was Ben Murphy in an excellent time of 36.47, in 6th position overall.

Next Harrier in, with probably the performance of the day, was Maddy Watson, also showing the benefits of her time at university in a time of 42.19, finishing 5th woman. Maddy improved on last year’s time in this race by a whopping five minutes. Next in was Doug Flint, not far behind in a time of 42.51. In a reversal of last year’s positions, Wendy Taylor pipped Andy Gallagher over the final stages to finish in a time of 43.25, as 9th woman and 4th FV35. In what appears to be becoming a tradition, Wendy Taylor ran the Gartmorn race the day after a 20-mile training run as she prepares for the London Marathon in April, and her performance on race day was a testament to her strength and commitment. 3rd Harrier woman was Sonja McFadden, in 45.41, 3rd FV45. The race also saw a welcome return to racing for former Lady’s captain Liz Mestecky, making here way back after a tough period of injuries.

For a change, Harriers Juniors were outnumbered by their senior counterparts, but with 16 Harriers Juniors racing, the club had the best club representation in the Junior 2 mile race. The 16 who ran put in terrific performances, with Levi Sweeney finishing as overall winner of the Junior race in an excellent time of 12.38, with Duthac Mardon second in 13.04. Ru Flint, in his first year in the Under-16 category ran very well to finish 7th overall. In the Under 13 categories, James was 3rd Male13 and only narrowly missed a top 10 finish, in 11th position overall. For the girls, Elspeth was 3rd Female 13.
