The Devil's Burdens relay is always a grand day out, but is often best by injury and illness. Unfortunately this year was no exception, with assorted withdrawals reducing our turnout from five teams to four.
Fortunately, the women's team was able to run at full strength, with some outstanding performances. The team was made up of Sonja McFadden, Emily Greaves and Rhian Evans, Maddy Watson and Greta Dargie, and Cathy Tilbrook, finishing as 6th women’s team, up against some seriously strong opposition. Sonja ran a stormer on Leg 1 (5th fastest woman), with Emily and Rhian doing their usual strong thing on the challenging Leg 2 (6th fastest Leg 2 women’s pair), Greta and Maddy putting together a great new double act on Leg 3 (6th fastest Leg 3 women’s pair) and Cathy finishing it off on the glory leg to bring the team home in a fine time of 4.02.08.
The Men’s A team (Tony Wayte, Nick Gough and Dougie Simpson, Andy Greaves and Levi Sweeney, and Phil Mestecky) struggled a bit with injury and illness, but finished in a creditable 40th position in a time of 3.43.21.
Our two mixed teams put in terrific efforts, with the Red Kites (Nathan Crighton, Gary Brock and Mark Dillon, Ruth Clark and Rachel Gallagher, and Wendy Howell) finishing in 99th position in a time of 4.25.45, and the Snow Owls (Phil Tipping, Iain Thomson and Jim McConnell, Rowan Mestecky and Dawn Gleeson, and Gordon Morrison) finishing not far behind in 104th position in 4.34.00. I think my favourite memory is seeing Dawn and Rowan finishing Leg 3 having run really hard but completing with big smiles on their faces. Another top Harriers day out!
