For the penultimate race in the club championship, half-a-dozen Harriers made an early Sunday start for the Neil McCover half marathon in Kirkintilloch. The forecast wind and rain just about held off, although it was a definite reminder that autumn is well and truly here. First Harrier home was Ben Murphy in 12th position overall, in a time of 1.22.47 (a 2-second pb!). Tony Wayte was next in a season’s best of 1.32.52 (6th MV50) (and his best half for five years). Jim Alexander followed his efforts at last week’s GSR with a fine 1.38.03 (10th MV50), not far ahead of Lauren Fairweather in an excellent 8th position in the women’s race in a terrific 1.39.40. Nicola Watson improved on her time from last year with 1.48.00 (6th FV50) and Julia Greenlees was 1st FV60 in a very good 1.57.16.
This race provided Lauren with three notable achievements. A 9-minute pb is something most of us would be very happy with. A smartly played joker gave her very good championship points, but most impressively, she completed a clean sweep of achievements awards, following her silver award at the Loch Ness marathon, a bronze award at last week’s East Neuk 10k, and a bronze award at today’s event (missing a silver today by less than a minute). Clean sweeps at all three distances are rare accomplishments even throughout a whole season, but Lauren has managed it in three consecutive weekends – a unique and very impressive set of races.
