Kinross 10k race

A good club turnout in Kinross on April 29th 2004 saw four personal bests from a total of seven Harriers taking part.
Runners and times were:
Phil Tipping 36.37 (pb)
Adrian Wake 39.10 - not a pb but his first sub-40 minute 10k for 4 years
Gordon Morrison 42.55 (pb)
Robert Connolly - under 45 mins (exact time not known)
Liz Mestecky 47.15 (pb)
Shelagh Crighton 49.12
Alison Caskie 49.30 (pb)

The team was supported and transported by Walter Simpson and Phil Mestecky.

Stuc a'Chroin

Three Harriers ran the very tough Stuc a'Chroin race on Sunday May 2nd 2004. Their places and times were
Phil Mestecky: 24th 2:48.40
Angela Mackenzie: 75th 3:27.55
Phil Tipping: 95th 3:46.00

As our pictures suggest, it's a gruelling 15 mile course with 5000 ft of climb, so just finishing is an impressive achievement.

Knock Hill race

On Wednesday May 26th a good turnout of Harriers took part in the 5 mile race up and over the Knock behind Crieff. Auchterarder 10k 2004

On Wednesday June 2nd a bunch of Harriers ran in the small but friendly Auchterarder 10k. Adrian Wake was third in the senior veteran class with 42.43, and Jim McConnell, Rob Bolton and Gordon Morrison ran respectable times. An exceptional run by young Harrier Fraser Deacon, with a time of 40.44, got him home as the second fastest junior. Well done also to Ben Wake and Jasper Allen, two other young Harriers who took part.

Crieff 10k race 2004

Walter Simpson masterminded the Crieff 10k race again on July 18th 2004, and just under 200 runners finished the course. Record times were set by Andrew Wright and Toni McIntosh as first male and female, finishing in 34.26 and 36.28 respectively. For Strathearn Harriers, Phil Tipping was first home in 40.39, closely followed by the other Comrie Phil in 40.57.

Other Harriers' times were:
43.51 Adrian Wake
46.35 John Pritchard
47.44 Gordon Morrison
47.46 Eric Sidebottom
55.31 Sue Drummond
55.31 Edward Elworthy

The small profit generated by the 10k has been donated to Logos, a group that works with young people in Crieff.

Comrie Fun Run 2004

The Comrie Fun Run on August 5th attracted a field of over 40 runners to enjoy the scenic 4.1 mile course on a warm and overcast evening. Young local runner Joss Hay finished first in 27.31, closely followed by Harrier Phil Tipping in 27.48. First lady home was Cathy Tilbrook in 35.32.

People

The Ben

on September 4th 2004 Adrian Wake completed the Ben Nevis race for the nth time, this year a minute faster than last! Adrian was placed 284 out of 364 finishers, in a time of 2:36:17. Pretty good for a man of his age, or indeed a man of any age.
Arch rival Eric Sidebottom was unfortunately injured and did not compete.
The pics , courtesy of carnethy.com, give some indication of how tough a race this is.
Going up! Going down!

Well done Helen!

Congratulations to Helen Forster, a Strathearn Harrier who has started to run competitively this year.
Helen ran the Glasgow 10K in September 2004 and finished 640th out of 3897. She has also just starred in the Great North Run, with an adjusted time of 1.55 and a position of 9377th out of 50,000 starters. A member of Helen's training team described her performance as "brilliant", with which we agree.

Well done also to Phil Mestecky who ran the Pentland Skyline Hill Race on October 10th. This involves 16 miles in distance and 6200 feet of climb, and Phil finished a very creditable 40th out of 169 runners in a time of 3.03.49.

here has some pics of the race and the runners.

and finally....a chilling tale reported by a medical harrier!

A group of some intrepid (some would say foolish) harriers went out for the Sunday morning run from Crieff last Sunday. You may recall it was an icy, very cold morning. One member of the group presumably whilst in the shower on his return happened upon the cause of his discomfort.

Now many of you will be familiar with chillblains and maybe frostnip if you have skied . Has any of you ever come across a frostbitten scrotum ? Well one of the intrepid 6 last Sunday has. So if you see someone running as if he is in discomfort then you may have come across the unlucky man with an ischaemic scrotum.

Is there a market for heated running shorts ?

Latest news: the runner in question assures us that it is "healing nicely"
