Strathearn Harriers - New Year's Day Run 2014

Carnethy Skyloop

Race Date: 12 October 2025

The Carnethy Skyline race was one of the classics of the Scottish hill running scene. Access issues over some of the old route have forced an amended route, now known as the Carnethy Skyloop.

This report from Graeme Warren: Three Harriers took to the start line at Lothianburn today for a sunny second edition of the Carnethy Skyloop (30km, 1700m elevation) - similar to the old Skyline course but bypassing Black Hill and Hare Hill. Great conditions, with the Pentlands looking at their best and just a hint of morning mist clearing the tops before most of us got there. Almost too warm for mid-October!

Harris Pagett was keen to improve on last year's 2nd place and led for much of the race, but was hampered by cramp in the last 5k, eventually coming home in 4th in 2:34. Surely 1st is on the cards next year.

Like many around me, my legs deserted me in the last 6-7k, finishing in 3:21 with Ed Blows close behind and managing his pace to avoid cramp to finish in 3:35.

A great race by Carnethy Hill Runners but we'll all take suncream, salt tablets and more water next year!

This was the last race in this year's Long Classic Series with several Harriers completing the requisite 5 or more races, so watch this space to find out if Jon T secured the V40 crown.

For the record, Graeme finished in 28th position, and Ed was in 45th position. The race was won by Chris Larkin of Northumberland Fell Runners in a time of 2.30.58. There were 153 finishers.
