Anna Hammond and Nicola Watson headed south for the Jedburgh 3 Peaks Ultra. For Anna, this was a debut ultra, while for Nic, this was her first ultra for three years. The Jedburgh ultra is a 38 mile mixed terrain run, starting and finishing in the Borders town of Jedburgh, with a challenging section over the Eildon Hills. For added spice, the route also includes a quick tour of a children's playground (up a climbing frame, down a slide) at Checkpoint 3 in Bowden. Fortunately, the weather was kind, if cold, although the hill section was blasted with strong winds to add to the challenge.
Annd Hammond gave us this report: A lovely day with perfect weather, other than very windy on the hills. A very friendly, well organised race with the right number of food/drink stops. It was a race of 2 halves : Nicola went off like a rocket and was curtailed by me who had a cold and feeling rubbish. Then the wonderful Fiona McDonald and Tony Wayte appeared and gave us a massive boost, and me paracetamol! After that I picked up and really enjoyed the second half. Amazingly enough Nicola sorted out the navigation and got us back on track when we went wrong!! We stayed together throughout and ended up just over 8 hr which was 13/14 women and 5/6 FV50. Happy to finish.
And Nicola added: Absolutely brutal, the wind nearly blew us away on the Eildon Hills. Toughest thing I’ve done in a very long time.
Anna and Nic ran together and finished in 8.14.46, in 59th and 60th positions. The race was won by Charles Houston in 4.15.35, and the women's race was won by Kim Cavill in 6.35.53. There were 128 finishers.
